What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson is a chronic, progressive neuro degenerative disorder to control nervous system that they affect both voluntary and involuntary movements of body. In Parkinson’s disease, rate of progressive of onset is gradual and slow.

Some Parkinson’s patients experience disturbance in daily function, roles and depression. Even barely notice tremor in one hand on their early stage.

Who get Parkinson’s disease?

Above 50% men than women get Parkinson’s disease. Most commonly seen in person’s 60 years of age and older. Average age of onset is 65 age years with majority of cases occur between 50 and 70 years.

10 percent of cases occur below the age of 40 years may be inherited.

Common causes of Parkinson’s disease:

  • Genetics
  • Abnormalities of basal ganglia function mostly idiopathic common affecting 18percent of persons.

Secondary Cause:

  • Post viral infection- encephalin
  • Toxin-carbon monoxide mercury
  • Drugs and medication like antipsychotic drug
  • Vascular disease, tumors
  • Metabolic disorder-Hyperparathyroidism
  • Repeated head injury
  • Environmental factor like pollution, herbicides and pesticides

Pathogenesis of Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s disease caused due to certain nerve cells in brain called substantia nigra become diminished and die. Usually these cells produce chemical called Dopamine a neurotransmitter that helps the cells of the brain to transmit signals between areas in brain. When these dopamine level decreases, it causes the abnormal brain activity leads to motor dysfunction.

Clinical Symptoms:

  • Rigidity-muscle stiffness present and limit movements in body
  • Brady Kinesis-slow movement like dragging of feet and take time to get out of chair
  • Tremor- Shaking of limps, head, hand or finger present meanwhile some may experience pin rolling tremor
  • Impaired posture- Posture become stopped and have unsteady walk and balance

Secondary Symptoms:

  • Decreases facial expressions
  • Loss of smell
  • Loss of involuntary movements like smiling, blinking, etc.
  • Handwriting changes
  • Depression’
  • Anxiety
  • Dropping of saliva
  • Thinking Difficulty
  • Hallucination
  • Delusion
  • Urinary Problem
  • Constipation
  • Absence of arm swing

Stages of Parkinson’s disease:

Condition of person’s severity can be assess using 5 stages of Parkinson’s disease.

Stage-I

Symptoms usually mild and do not interfere with day-to-day activities. Even changes of misinterpret as sign of aging. Also movement symptoms affect one-side of body.

Stage-II

Symptoms at this stage become worse and making ability activities more difficult. Still able to look after themselves.

  • Movement symptoms affect both side
  • Difficult in walking and balancing present
  • Poor posture and facial expression present

Stage-III

This is mid-stage where of everything become severe. However, the person still independent

Loss of balance, slowness of movement are more common. Daily activities such as eating, bathing, and dressing becomes much more challenging task.

Stage-IV

At this stage, person’s need dependency for every activities due to limitation in motor and non-motor movements.

Stage-V

Symptoms at this stage become so severe that even standing on own may be impossible. Person require wheelchair or some way in bedridden condition. Person visibly show symptoms like delusion, weight loss, sleep disturbance.

Diagnosis:

To diagnose Parkinson’s disease is based on medical history and family history of neurologic disorder as well current symptoms present in each person. Apart from this, some other imagine tests like CT scan or MRI scan may be used to rule out the specification of disorder.
