Spinal Column Disease

The Spine consists of 33 bones called vertebrae which protects and support the spinal cord and nerves. Spinal Osteo arthritis is the damage or wear and tear of the spinal vertebrae and intervertebral discs. If you have injured your spine, then you may be more likely to develop spinal arthritis.

Most patients having spinal osteoarthritis will not need surgery. However, it is a degenerative condition that may worsen as a person grows older and affect any region of the spine.

In which the cervical affects the neck, thoracic affect upper, mid-back, lumbar affects lower back, and Lumbosacral affects lower back or sacrum. Since this Spondylosis deformans the growth of bone spurs or bony bridge also affect the spine.

Spondylosis

Spondylosis:

It is the degenerative arthritis of spine. Pathological changes like Osteophytic occur in the vertebral bodies. Osteophytic changes are mostly anterior or lateral in projection. It rarely impinges upon the spinal cord or nerve roots. Osteophytic changes are like a bony outgrowths or bony spur formation in the vertebra. It also affect in the intervertebral disc.

Spondylolysis:

Unilateral or bilateral defect or fracture of the part of the vertebra (pars interarticularis) during sports and repeated stress on lower back.

Spondylolisthesis:

A vertebra slides forward over the bone below it (lower spine). The spinal cord or nerve root squeezed. Back pain, numbness, weakness in both legs that leads to losing control over your bladder or bowel.

Spondylitis:

Inflammation, redness, swelling in the vertebra and sometimes joint mostly occurs in the lower section of spine.

Types:

According to the condition and site of damage it may be classified as:

Ankylosis Spondylosis/ Spondylitis/ Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis:

It is termed as Ankylosis Spondylosis/ Spondylitis/ Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis which is an auto-immune chronic inflammatory condition that results in body reactions and has an infection characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and rise in temperature of the part of the vertebral joint.

Cervical Spondylosis/ Spondylitis/ Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis:

If this affects the cervical spine and discs in neck, they are called cervical Spondylosis, Spondylitis. It is very common and worsens with age as the discs dehydrate and shrink; bone spurs and other signs of osteoarthritis develop.

Thoracic Spondylosis/ Spondylitis/ Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis:

It is a form of Osteoarthritis which affects in the upper back that refers to natural wear and tear in the spine.

Lumbar Spondylosis/ Spondylitis/ Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis:

This Spondylosis is a degenerative condition that affects the lower spine and mid-pain by narrowing the space between the vertebrae. Thus often cause poor bladder, controlling, unsteady gait, and other severe neurological problems.

Lumbosacral Spondylosis/ Spondylitis/ Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis:

If the Spondylosis affects the Lumbosacral region in which it forms low back pain and affects the health problem which causes the disc between the bones of the spine to become stiffer and can break down often grow bone spurs.

Intervertebral Disc

Disc Bulge:

Bulging disc occurs when the spongy disc between the vertebra bone become compressed and bulged out. Each disc contains tough outer layer with gel in the middle. The gel may decrease with age, become compressed and push out. When the disc bulges, it may contact with a nerve and trigger pain. Mostly it occurs at the bottom of the spine.

Disc desiccation:

Disc desiccation is one of the common features of degenerative disc disease. Vertebral disc are full of fluid (gel) which keeps them both flexible and sturdy. The disc begins to dehydrate or slowly lose this fluid as the age increases. It causes stiffness in your back. Pain weakness or a tingling sensation in back or numbness will travel from your back and down one or both legs.

Disc herniation:

Spinal discs can develop cracks, which allow the leakage of the internal cushioning material. The material can press spinal cord and nerve. Inner nucleus of disc may leak and compress other disc. They are also called as a slipped disc or ruptured disc or Prolapse. It results in pain, numbness or weakness.

Signs and Symptoms:

The common symptoms of Spondylosis include stiffness and mild pain that can get worse. Sitting for long periods without moving is also included in the symptoms such as:

  • Unable to sit and stand
  • Unable to blend and pick up things from floor
  • Unable to lift small weights
  • Pain present in the back, hip and referred pain runs throughout the leg
  • Muscular cramps
  • Unable to raise the leg
  • Chang of gait
  • Heaviness in the hip and back region
  • Swelling around the back and hip
  • Instability/ kyphosis/ scoliosis
  • Loss of cervical/ lumbar/ lordosis
  • A grinding or popping sensation while moving the spine
  • Weakness in the hands or legs
  • Poor coordination
  • Headaches
  • Muscle Stiffness and Pain
  • Loss of balance and difficulty in walking
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Abnormal sensation may develop numbness or tingling
  • Limited range of motion in affected joints
Spondylosis

Causes:

The main causes of Spondylosis include:

  • An occupation that stresses your spine
  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • A family history of spine problems
  • Smoking
  • Muscle injury or tension due to sitting or sleeping in an awkward position
  • Sitting at a computer all-day
  • Poor posture
  • Strains, sprains, and other minor injuries
  • Stiffness and poor muscle flexibility
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Whiplash-a typical car accident-related injury
  • A fracture in the upper spine
  • Spinal stenosis – due to osteoarthritis
  • Lifting heavy objects for long time
  • Rash driving on two-wheeler and four-wheeler
  • During the time of pregnancy (increases baby weight)
  • At the time of lumbar puncture done for giving general anesthesia
  • Disc desiccation, dehydration, protrusion, bulge, and herniation
